The New Amsterdam Market, down by the South Street Seaport, is happening almost every Sunday on until the end of December. This is a great time of year to visit, and enjoy the fall weather and the view of the bridges. You may remember our friends at Lonestar Taco (see here); well they have a booth at the market, making tacos fresh to order. I got one of their Green Market tacos, in this case filled with butternut squash and cauliflower with a sweet and spicy sauce.
The folks at Free Bread were offering a few varieties of their gluten-free breads. I tried the Jalaa — a cheddar-jalapeno biscuit that was surprisingly moist and light, not to mention full of flavor. I would never have guessed that it was gluten-free.
These little Dutch pancakes, called poffertjes, may be the perfect food for a crisp fall day. A friendly Dutch woman was making them to order in a buttered poffertjes pan. She said the name comes from the fact that the pancakes poof up as they cook. The mini-pancakes were covered in powdered sugar, given another pat of butter, and served with a cranberry-pomegranate relish for some sweet-sour action. I’d recommend taking them with you as you walk north along the river until you see this:
