Let’s play a little game. You know that word association game that psychiatrists use? I’m going to say a word and you say the first thing that comes to your mind. Ready?
I say: Sandwiches.
I can’t hear your response (feel free to leave it in the comments below), but I would bet that it wasn’t “sweet potatoes”. In fact, if you did say “sweet potatoes” you may want to go see an actual psychiatrist, because that’s not a normal association. And yet, there are two restaurants almost directly across Court St from each other that both feature sweet potato as the main ingredients in a sandwich. They are both so different that I thought I’d put them in a head-to-head battle.

I’m a lazy person. If I can eat a meal in 1 bowl or on 1 plate I would. That’s why I love rice plates, rice bowls, soupy noodles….and dumplings. I LOVEEEE…EEEEEE to eat dumplings. I believe I can eat 25 dumplings in 1 meal. Drizzle with soy sauce, sesame oil and hot sauce HHHHMMMMMMMMMM. Dumplings are like soft delicious pillows but then again I don’t think I want to sleep on a giant dumpling. My favorite is probably the good old pork and chives and occasionally fish dumplings are great too.
When my friends had asked me what I want to eat for dinner I quickly said “dumplings please!” My friend knew just the place. It’s a quick drive from her house and she and her family frequently go. Like so many low-key Chinese restaurants in LA, you have to know where it is to find it. We pulled into a tiny generic parking lot with few stores inside. The sign to the dumpling place said Dumpling 10053 while the Chinese name is eh…something (I have kindergarten Chinese reading skills). We walked into a near empty restaurant but it filled up later in the evening. Prepare to wait for everything because there seem to be only 1 person in the front of the house taking orders, bringing food to your table and taking your cash.

Meat and whiskey! Thats all you need to know about Char No.4. Oh and I guess their shrimp and grits are pretty good too oh and fried cheese curds. And that pretty much the reasons what brought me, Howard, Matt and Anh to Char No.4 or at least for me. I have heard many good things about their shrimp and grits but what I really wanted was MEAT. Howard showed interest when he found out they served fried cheese curds. He had some amazing ones in his Wisconsin trip.
So we went on a Thursday night and surprisingly we were all on time! Really rare that happens, eh I guess I’m always 30mins late to everything. We went in and got seated right away. The waiter quickly told us that they were out of the smoked half chicken and it was only 8:15pm. I took a lot longer than usual to finally decide what I wanted. But here’s what we all got.
