The weather warmed up just in time for the start of a new season of Smorgasburg, an outdoor food vendor market. Every new season, there are always new vendors popping up. This past Saturday, I tried two of the new vendors and visited a Smorgasburg/Brooklyn Flea regular.

Get your breakfast tacos at The New Amsterdam Market!
It’s been a long road for my friends at Lonestar Taco. Around June last year they had a preview party that showed off what they envisioned Lonestar Taco to be. Ever since then they have been doing events here and there but nothing really permanent.
So, finally when they announced that they will be one of the food vendors at The New Amsterdam Market, I was thrilled for them. Yes! I can finally get my breakfast tacos on. This past Sunday they had a tamarind pork belly special and when I heard “pork belly” I had to run down to try it out. It was super good and the pork belly was tender (thick slices too) and really love the tamarind flavor. I also had the chorizo and egg, which was just as delicious. There’s something really wonderful about eggs and tortilla eaten together.
Please head down to the market on Sundays and get yourself a taco (or three).

After eating at SriPraPhai in Woodside, Queens, my next Queens stop was……….the Butcher Bar. I was pretty excited to try this place and had made plans with friends to try it. Seeing all those delicious looking photos, I had my mind set on the PBLT sandwich and some double smoked burnt ends. Though just a few hours before heading out to Astoria, the INTERNET spoke and said that I should go to John Brown Smokehouse instead. Being a cheap aZZ, the cheaper price at John Brown Smokehouse quickly won my over.

*This meal was eaten last year.
Howard: When Donny invited me to dinner at Mary Queen of Scots with our friends Mo and Etta, he mentioned that there was not a lot of vegetarian food on the menu. I was intrigued by what vegetarian food I did see, however, so I agreed to go. The two vegetarian options I wanted were both salads, though one was listed as an appetizer and the other a main, so I was able to order both. I also ordered a side of “Fried Boozy Brussels Sprouts” for the table.

Few days ago I got an email from my sister, Bonnie, about hibernation. She is doing a series of blog posts about what people would wear or drink or eat or whatever to prep for cold wintry weather. Obviously my mind drifted towards food and thought what I would eat in preparation of going into hibernation or what I would eat for days if I get trapped in a snow storm. The answer was quite simple, a pork belly stew!
This time around, I decided not to follow any recipes and basically go with my guts (or natural talent at throwing a bunch of stuff together and stick it in the oven?). I thought what would go well with pork belly in a stew-y situation? Here’s what I came up with…

Donny: Flushing in Queens, to many, seems like a legend, a myth, a food oasis. Maybe because it’s so freakin far out in freakin Queens that no one really want to be bothered with the train ride. That is certainly my main reason for not going to Flushing as often as I want. On a good day it’ll take me about an hour to get out there from Brooklyn.
My last trek out to Flushing was the Summer of 2008. And 3 years later I thought, “hey what the heck, let’s go check out Flushing!” and also Mr.Howard here has never been.
Howard: Yes, so we’ve been taking about going to Flushing for about three years now, but it was the news that Flushing Mall may be turned into a parking lot that spurred us to actually make the trip. I was concerned about finding vegetarian food, though Donny assured me that wouldn’t be a problem. (Donny: I did?!)

Recently I blogged about finding treasures at Woorijip well I found another one! This wasn’t as good as the spare ribs but it suuuuuuuuuuuureee made me feel guilty. A whole box of sliced pork belly stir fried with Chinese chives. Afterwards I quickly drank 2 cups of hot oolong tea.
