Recently I blogged about finding treasures at Woorijip well I found another one! This wasn’t as good as the spare ribs but it suuuuuuuuuuuureee made me feel guilty. A whole box of sliced pork belly stir fried with Chinese chives. Afterwards I quickly drank 2 cups of hot oolong tea.

How do you like a restaurant even before you ordered the food? For me, by playing Runaway by Bon Jovi then followed by Always and Wanted Dead or Alive. How frakkin’ cool is this place?
My family were having lunch before going to the Buddhist Temple for Chinese New Year. My sister, Bonnie, took us here because I had a craving for soupy noodles.

Toby’s Public House

This was my 2nd time going to Toby’s and was our last stop on the Brooklyn pizza tour. By then Mo, Howard and I were stuffed up with pizza but since it was our last stop we went all out. A table full of Old Speckled Hen is pretty eh?

Dramatic lighting on my spicy pecorino pizza. Ah.

What would you do with a 2.5lb slab of pork belly? I can always just do my usual “sake braised pork belly” or just plain roast the thing in the oven. Looking around the kitchen and in the fridge trying to see what I need to use up before they go bad. Also stashed in my to-do recipes book, I thought about doing a roasted pork belly with miso paste. Well as always I have miso paste in the fridge. Okay what else, mint from few weeks ago, rice wine?, yakitori salt that my friend got me in Japan, ginger and peppercorns. I thought about curing the belly with just the salt and peppercorn but there wasn’t enough salt to cure the whole slab. In my mind the ginger and mint should work good together right? A little spicy and a little refreshing.

Bubby’s is a mystery to me. It sits on a corner in DUMBO right by the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Has GREAT GREAT views, giant windows on all sides for maximum natural light and scenery viewing, one of the biggest restaurants ever!, affordable, and best of all fantastic food. My general impression of big restaurants (big meaning the amount of square footage it has) is usually a soulless and non personal entity that only serves crappy food at high prices. But Bubby’s is something different. I walk in and feel refreshed from the high ceiling and the abundant natural light. The hostess and waiters are always friendly. The food is so very good and the amount of food that they give you for the price they’re charging, am I dreaming? I always barely finish my plate of food because there’s just so much! Plus they give you biscuits and jam to start off! Hell yeah!
