Choice Streets 2013

One of my favorite food events I attended last year was Village Voice’s Choice Streets. Obviously one of the thing I liked about it was the location. It was held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. It was also one of the most causal food events I’ve been to. So of course this year I had to go back. While the format was the same, there were few things that were different from last year that, in a way, made this year a little less fun (just a little) but overall I still had a good time.

For some unknown reasons, few of the trucks didn’t show up and they may had sold more tickets than last year because the lines! There were few times where I just stood in a line for half an hour. And by 8:30p some of the trucks had ran out of food already which then added extra pressure on other trucks to continue.

Here are some bites I managed to get….

This past Tuesday at the 69th Armory, The Village Voice threw its 6th annual Choice Eats festival with over 86 participating New York City restaurants. While we wanted to eat every dish (and sample as many alcoholic beverage), after our seventh or eighth sample we realized that feast feat was, well, impossible. And dangerous. We did manage to hit the munchie double digits (I counted about 18 different restaurants) before we rolled back home. As first timers with zero prep and really no desire to pace ourselves, I think we did a pretty good job.

Two days ago I got an email inviting me to a special preview of Paper Magazine’s Super (Duper) Market. Starting today, 7/13/2012, and running through Sunday, the Market brings together several artisan food makers from New York and beyond. One of the great strengths of the Super (Duper) Market is that it brings in many vendors that don’t usually come to food events, like the restaurant Brucie, who was sampling some of their excellent homemade mozzarella. Also significant is the fact they brought in some West Coast vendors, like Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream. I finally got to try their Secret Breakfast flavor — bourbon with cornflakes. Also delicious: the red velvet danish from Red Rooster in Harlem; the enormous sno-ball from Imperial Woodpecker; sour cherry saltwater taffy from Salty Road; spicy food from Taste of Ethiopia; and strawberry basil pie from First Prize Pies.

On Tuesday we attended the first ever Village Voice Choice Streets festival. Street food vendors were lined up alongside the U.S.S. Intrepid, making for a dramatic setting. The food was good and we had a lot of fun, but the best part was being able to get aboard the aircraft carrier itself. Here’s a view of the festival from the Intrepid:

Carts in the Parc
This past Sunday I went to one of the New York Food and Wine Festival events, Carts in the Parc hosted by Andrew Zimmern at the Foodparc. If you don’t know what Foodparc is go read Ed Levine’s write-up on it. I had no idea it was so close to my work office, it could get dangerous for me in the future.

At the Vendy I went as part of the Schnitzel crew this time I went as part of the Big Gay Ice Cream crew. I was wearing my Big Gay Ice Cream shirt and was called a traitor by Mr.Schnitzel, HA! Last time I helped Doug and Bryan out they had me passing out free samples. This time they didn’t so I didn’t really do much work for them. I did do a food run for them, cleaned off the table and refilled their bowl with more lemon scented “moist towelette”. Highlight of the day was shaking hands with Andrew Zimmern, spotting Ming Tsai and standing next to Mary Alice from Charm City Cakes. Oh yeah and all the free tasty treats from Foodparc and all the food truck vendors were pretty great too.
