And here I go again, back at the Milk Bar. After dinner at Ippudo, which my friend asked me to compare their pork buns with Momofuku’s and in the end I preferred the bun from Momofuku but did like the spicy mayo from Ippudo, I decided to go to the Milk Bar. It was just a quick walk anyways.
I went with Anh and she got the crack pie. I was thinking about the banana cake but then I saw the cinnamon bun pie. Hmm I love cinnamon buns. When I ordered it, the cashier asked if I was going to eat there or to go. I said there. He asked because they needed to heat it up if I was to dine in. After 5 minutes they handed me a warm box. I open it up to find the slice of cinnamon bun pie. Oh nice and warm. YUM. It was pretty good, good cinnamony and would’ve went well with a cup of coffee. I also got a slice of the chocolate malt cake with marshmallow. It was pretty good, I could taste the malt in it.

I don’t know about you but I have a hard time finding places to take family/relatives to. I don’t really go out that much and when/if I do go out I tend to go to places I’ve been to many many times or places near my apartment. The weekend before my older sister was here, my cousin and aunt from Vancouver were in town. I wanted to take them to a place where it felt New York. Of course, in my head, I ran through all the nice restaurants I’ve been to and there aren’t that many. In the end I took them to Prune. I hope they liked it.
So a weekend later, my older sister was in town again for a wedding photo gig. Taking my sister around is a lot easier because I usually just take her to places I wanna go to. Easy! Few weeks ago I was walking around the East Village and finally found Porchetta. Never knew where it was exactly but I’ve been wanting to go. Anyways so I mentioned it to my sister and she said, yeah whatever. She quickly changed her yeah whatever to OOOOOOHHHHH when I showed her the post and photos from A Gluten Free Guide.

I was watching an episode of “Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home” in which they made some fancy French desserts. One of the recipes involved making pate a choux, a kind of all purpose batter that you can use to make cream puffs, eclairs, gougeres, and profiteroles (among other things). It actually didn’t look to hard, so I figured “Why not?”

As Donny said, i think we’re the last of the food bloggers to visit Momofuku Milk Bar, but after seeing the movie the Hurt Locker (quite good, but a victim of its hype) we were looking for a snack in the area and we headed over to the Milk Bar. I was tempted by the soft serve but I wanted something more substantial, like cake. I opted for the Dulce de Leche flavor, and they cut a slice from a gigantic mountain of a cake. The cake itself was on the dry side (I guess I should have gotten some milk along with it) though the different layers of frosting were delicious.

I believe Howard and I are the last to visit the Milk Bar. Seems like every food blog has blogged about how awesome this place is. To be honest I was just too damn lazy to go. Well we finally made it. After watching The Hurt Locker at the Sunshine theater Howard and I were looking for something else to do. I wanted to snack on something and suggested the Milk Bar.

Funny how I was typing my post on Momofuku Milk Bar where I had their banana cake. And I said on there that I love the flavor of bananas. So of course I was happy to see that Doug, Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, had banana-cocoa puree as a topping today! I just took a red eye flight last night from LA and didn’t get much sleep but damit I’m gonna get me some ice cream after work! I walked from 32nd to 17th. While I was walking down I came up with my 2nd option in case he ran out of banana-cocoa puree. Then I remember seeing wafers as another topping and thought it would be mighty tasty to add that on top of the banana-cocoa puree. When I got there I asked him if he still has the puree and he said YES. SWEET! And yes I got the wafers also. I took a BIG first bite and it was everything I hoped it would be. Really strong banana flavors, love it! Plus the wafers it felt like I was eating a deconstructed banana cocoa cream pie. I once ate a whole banana cream pie by myself.
It was also nice to chat a bit with Doug about the Vendys and Men Pocky sticks and Japan. Not sure what I’ll do once he retires for the winter season. *sigh
