I used to work on the Upper East Side, and occasionally I’d walk past Cafe Sabarsky, which is in the same building as the Neue Gallery for German and Austrian Art. This was in the dark ages, before this blog existed, and yet it always stuck in the back of my mind. After starting this blog I started reading other food blogs, and references to the greatness of Cafe Sabarsky starting popping up on blogs like the Amateur Gourmet and My Name is Yeh. On a recent Thursday morning I found myself on the Upper East Side with several hours to kill, and decided to eat breakfast there.

Okay, going to take a break from writing about LA and get back to NYC.

Peels! Finally! Yes this has been my to go list ever since I found out where Shuna Fish Lydon was going to work. Besides being a great pastry chef she’s also a great photographer! Check out her blog, Eggbeater.

I found myself on the Upper East Side recently, and I was wandering down Lexington Avenue. I worked on Lexington for a long time, and I never really found a place where I loved to eat. I was there too early for lunch, so I was on the lookout for a place to eat breakfast. I came across Le Pain Quotidien, an upscale bakery-restaurant chain, and decided to give it a try. I went for one of the specials, an artichoke and sun-dried tomato frittata, served with a salad and some bread ($9.99). The frittata came out really fast, leading me to believe that they have a ton of them pre-made and they just serve them up as they are ordered. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, and it’s probably par for the course when it comes to egg dishes, but I was hyper aware of it. The frittata was good, but the disparate ingredients didn’t really seem to meld. There were big chunks of artichoke, which is a definite plus for me, but the whole affair was kind of bland. The two types of bread were both delicious and crusty; so good that I considered buying a couple of loaves from the shop at the front.

No. 7 Sub
MAAANNNYYY MAAANNNYYYY months ago No. 7 Sub started to do breakfast sandwiches from 8 to 10:30am. I was definitely intrigued. Some of their sandwiches don’t quite work as a whole but still tasty. I love the bread that they use soft but still sturdy enough to whole everything together. Yes I like this place, a lot. Now it took me a long time to try all of their sandwiches. It took me so long that in the middle of it they changed the menu.

Locanda Verde
I had no idea it was THIS difficult to find a decent breakfast place in Tribeca. But thanks to Serious Eats I found Locanda Verde which perfectly was connected to the hotel that my sister was staying while she was in town. Though I thought I had found a new place to eat but she had already gone there for breakfast the day before. Ah oh well it was new to me.

There weren’t that many things I wanted to eat on the menu but finally decided on Uova Modenese poached eggs with cotechino hash, spinach, and tomato hollandaise. I didn’t know what “cotechino” was and wasn’t having high expectations. When the dish came I still wasn’t expecting much seeing how tiny the dish was, yes yes I eat a lot. It does look pretty though. With the fork I got a some eggs, spinach and sausages and ate it. !!!!!!!!! WOW!! The tomato hollandaise sauce was amazing! It was my first time having hollandaise sauce with tomatoes in them and I’m sure without them this would’ve just been a plain dish. I really wanted to eat slowly just to savor the moment and wished there was more bread.

Breakfast sandwich
Oh Mile End, I like how you bring a TON of people onto Hoyt Street every weekend during brunch hours. No I don’t actually. I hate waiting with big crowds, I’m hungry and I want to eat right away but for some odd reason I don’t mind waiting for dim sum. Weird. Anyways the only time I’ve been to Mile End was just to go and pick up my Montreal bagels.

Yes I’ve been wanting to go try Mile End for a while now but they close too damn early everyday and with the crowds over the weekend I’ll never get to go! Oh wait they just did announce their brand spankin new dinner hours! w00t! Maybe now I can get my smoked meat finally?

Biscuit & gravy candied bacon grapefruit
Hype is a very dangerous thing. It can help or hurt you. I have heard a lot of great things about Egg and the crazy wait during brunch hours. I have also heard that its only an okay place and its just all hype. Still I couldn’t help but be curious after staring at their menu. Fried chicken! Duck hash! Biscuits and gravy! Yes yes yes please!
