Yolk!!
Once a month I would tell Howard that “damit we need to go here and here and here and here before 2009 ends!” And he would say “sure sure sure and when when when?” And I would say “how about this on that day and that on this day?” But in the end we either ended up either doing something else or we get lazy or I get lazy. But damit not this time!! I don’t remember how long it has been since I first wanted to eat at Roberta’s. I only remember Howard liking it and Mr. Paulie Gee is a fan as well.
We had came up with an awesome idea to travel around Brooklyn to try many pizzerias on Labor Day. Our friend, also another pizza fanatic, offered to drive so that we can make it to as many places in one day as possible. We had 5 places on our to-go map but by the end of the day we only made it to 2 plus 1 unplanned spot. The biggest problem we ran into was the West Indies Parade that took place on Labor Day. We were mostly stuck in traffic and trying to figure our way around Brooklyn. The other problem that we ran into, which was more obvious, was that it was a holiday and the restaurants would be closed. The third problem of this whole pizza tour was that it was a pizza tour. How the hell would it be a good idea to eat at 5 different pizza places in 1 day? We had decided to only order 1 pie and each of use will only eat 1 slice. As you read on, you will know that we didn’t follow that rule.

This past Saturday was the 5th Vendy Awards and it was my first time attending. Well I didn’t just attend I was part of the Schnitzel & Things crew. Sean Basinski, the leader of the Vendy Awards, said 5 years ago there were only about 50 people that attended the Vendy but over a 1000 people this year. It’s no longer just hot dogs or halal or taco trucks. The new breed of trucks are leaner, quicker and fancier. There are definitely many factors that play into this whole movement. But one thing is for sure, people love street food. I personally love all street foods. As long as you’re making good food people will come.

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck
Funny how I was typing my post on Momofuku Milk Bar where I had their banana cake. And I said on there that I love the flavor of bananas. So of course I was happy to see that Doug, Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, had banana-cocoa puree as a topping today! I just took a red eye flight last night from LA and didn’t get much sleep but damit I’m gonna get me some ice cream after work! I walked from 32nd to 17th. While I was walking down I came up with my 2nd option in case he ran out of banana-cocoa puree. Then I remember seeing wafers as another topping and thought it would be mighty tasty to add that on top of the banana-cocoa puree. When I got there I asked him if he still has the puree and he said YES. SWEET! And yes I got the wafers also. I took a BIG first bite and it was everything I hoped it would be. Really strong banana flavors, love it! Plus the wafers it felt like I was eating a deconstructed banana cocoa cream pie. I once ate a whole banana cream pie by myself.
It was also nice to chat a bit with Doug about the Vendys and Men Pocky sticks and Japan. Not sure what I’ll do once he retires for the winter season. *sigh

Mini ricotta burgers
Well yes Eat to Blog has finally made it to Blue Hill. Eh Blue Hill in the West Village. Howard and I have been wanting to go here and have been saying to want to go here for a while now. And yes we do hope to visit Blue Hill in Stone Barns some day. Unlike Babbo where you have to call exactly 1 month before and still they give you either 5pm or 10pm, Howard just logged onto Opentable and BAM made reservations for 4 within 15mins. I’m always scared about under dressing so I spent a good few days trying to find photos of how people dress to go to Blue Hill. I know dressy what how dressy. Another thing that I was scared about was the raw veggie on nails dish. How do you eat them? Well 2 weeks later at 8:50pm I found myself standing in front of Blue Hill on Waverly Street. I decided to go jacketless, tieless and messenger bagless. I did wear my fancy black shoes and a Via Audio tote bag to hold my camera. Well here goes.

Popeye pizza
Oh Jim Lahey. I have never been to Sullivan Street Bakery. Ah I know don’t hate me, please. Howard has already been to Company Pizza or Co. or whatever.
After watching a friend’s comedy show in Chelsea, I was hoping to go back to Artichoke for a thick soupy slice with the gang. I told Howard my plan and he asked me, “You know what’s near by right?” I answered no and he said Co! OOHHHH CO…….. And that was where Howard and I went for dinner while the rest of the people went to MaryAnn’s for Mexican food and pitchers of margaritas.

Dijon chicken
Shortly after the Schnitzel & Things truck rolled out there was word on Serious Eats that there would be a Moroccan food truck coming out soon. I was excited because there needs to be more savory non-taco trucks around. I quickly emailed Steph because she loves lamb. Finally one day, last week, Bistro Truck tweeted that they were going to have a soft opening with free food but with a limited menu. I figured there would be a long line so I decided not to go. Then yesterday on Twitter Steph said she was planning to try the truck. She’s lucky because she works right across from the truck. So today we met up at the truck for lunch.
