Midnight Music & Munchies

Midnight Music & Munchies
I’m going to start off by saying how FRAKKIN horrible this was and sorry to Howard since it was me that picked this. I’m sure I was heavily influenced by Top Chef, when the contestants had to cater a big event. I imagined each chef behind their own table serving up their munchies on proper plates with proper forks. The event being at the High Line Ballroom, there would a high ceiling with chandeliers hanging down. Crowded, yes, but everyone would be proper and polite so it would be tolerable. OOHHHH was I totally wrong!! Once Howard and I stepped into the venue I felt disgusted and my heart died. It was a total club scene, a total nightmare for me as I HATE clubs. Whatever, I was there for the food and the drinks and I paid $85 for this I might as well stay.

The very first thing we did was to get a drink. I really needed one after my heart was shattered. Surprisingly getting drinks at the party was quite easy and fast, maximum 2-3minute wait. The drinks that were served were mostly nasty but I managed to down everything. Though Steven Schneider’s Stairway to Heaven drink was the only one I sort of liked. The crispy rhubarb bitters made it interesting. The biggest disappointment of the night was definitely the food. Sure I guess I should’ve blamed it on my high expectations but come on, it’s the NYC Wine & Food Festival. With the likes of Harold Dieterle, Anne Burrell, Joey Campanaro and other great chefs I expected high quality, good tasting, mind blowing food!!!! It’s not too much to ask AT ALL. Instead what we got were uninspiring, lackluster, and out right crap! Yeah I said crap. The line for each food station took forever so while one of us stood in line the other one went to get more drinks. Table One had parmesan herb frico (blah, nothing exciting), arancini with duck and foie gras (I only had one and it tasted like a croquette), herbed grissini (REALLY? These were just plain breaksticks that you can for free at restaurants!), and taralle with almonds and black pepper (again nothing special).

Upstairs table had homemade cheese puffs with basil seeds (booring and mooshy), natural turkey jerky (these were so salty I had to barf it back out and threw the rest away), and big eye tuna wraps with bibb, cucumber avocado, cilantro (this was pretty good. Maybe if the piece of bibb was smaller and instead a piece of lettuce then I would’ve enjoyed it more). Okay back down to Table Two. By the time we got to Table Two, there was no line and the only thing left were giant platters of Harold’s edamame falafel with lemon tahini sauce. This was also VERY salty, almost inedible but I was able to eat four or five of these. One good thing came out of this was the single malt scotch gelato from Capogiro Gelato. Very creamy and the scotch flavor was great.

Before Howard and I left, we watched Tom Colicchio ripped the stage apart with his band. This man is talented!
