L.A. & S.F. Eats Day 4 - Maxim Cafe & Birthday Meal

Baked pork chop over rice
Haha another day and another Hong Kong style cafe.  This time we went to Maxim in Rowland Heights.  Straight translation, Maxim means “beautiful heart”.  Since I was not craving for anything specific I went for my usual baked ox-tongue over rice. The baked ox-tongue over rice is a very common dish in HK style cafes but not all cafes have it. I didn’t remember if Maxim had it or not but apparently not because I went through the menu three or four times and I didn’t see it on the menu. So I settled for the next best thing, baked pork chop over rice. Certain cafes let you add a fried egg on top too!

These are the things that make up a baked pork chop rice.  Deep fried pork chop covered in a tomatoey/ketchup sauce with onion and carrots over fried rice.  Then broiled with cheese on top.  YES!!  How I love this dish, the ox-tongue version is better though just because the tongue is oh so more tender than the pork chop.  I really don’t think I’ll ever get bored of this dish.

Peking duck
It was my mom’s lunar calendar birthday so the whole family had dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Rowland Heights.  I don’t remember the name of the restaurant and it probably doesn’t matter since it is a curse spot.  Every two years or so a new restaurant would take over the old restaurant.  Though the name may be different but it’s practically the same restaurant servering the same type of Chinese food.  Foods like chicken, whole lobster, crabs, fish, you know those giant Chinese banquet style restaurants.  The number seven is not a good luck number in Chinese so even though we only had five adults and one child we ordered nine dishes.  Yes NINE DISHES!  My mom said, “well we can always take the left overs home”.  Trueeeeee but still NINE DISHES for FIVE PEOPLE!!  Everytime the family goes out and eat, we always fill up the table with food.  My dad said our eyes are hungrier than our stomach.  How true that was.
Lettuce wrap w/ duck meat
So here are the dishes we ordered.
- Fish two ways (steamed whole and the head was used for a soup)
- Duck two ways (Peking duck and lettuce wrap)
- Tofu pot
- Chicken (very smooth very good)
- Saute vegetable (I forgot what vegetable it was)
- Long noodles (long noodles signify long life)
- Chinese dessert
Oh there were definitely leftovers. Most of the dishes were quite good except for the Peking duck which was a bummer. I love Peking duck but this one was a little weak. There were too much duck meat left on the skin. That’s a no no. Peking duck should be just skin and the shrimp chips were a bit stale but that didn’t really stop me from eating five Peking duck. Buns, duck skin, shrimp chip, scallion, hoisin sauce and chomp!
