L.A. & S.F. Eats Day 3 - Boston Cafe & Home Cooked Meal

Curry beef brisket
Craving for food is such a weird feeling especially when there was nothing to trigger it. A sudden crave for McD’s chicken nuggets will only be satisfied by McD’s chicken nuggets. So on Day 3 of my LA trip, I woke up to find myself craving for curry beef stew, specifically curry beef brisket from Hong Kong style cafes that I love. Good thing my parents are cool with whatever and wherever I wanted to eat. My mom have always praised about the curry beef brisket at Boston Cafe in what used to be the Hong Kong Supermarket plaza.

The restaurant itself used to be a KFC haha.  Hong Kong style cafes are my favorite!!  Hard to explain why I love it, I just do.  I love the type of food they serve and the wide variety of food they serve.  If you’re near one GO!!  I didn’t bother looking at the menu since I knew exactly what to eat, also I might Hainam chickenstart changing my mind.  My dad ordered the hainam chicken rice and my mom ordered the saute bitter melon with beef.  I also got an iced lemon tea, a must have for me at these cafes.  I think this style of curry is closer to Thai style but a lot less spicy.  Aaaaahhhhhh the smell of it really made me happy.  I scooped the sauce and couple pieces of brisket, tendons(the best part), and potatoes over to the plate of steamed white rice. I took a big bite and everything in the world at that moment was alright. The curry was flavorful and the brisket was tender. Had just the correct amount of spiciness to not over power anything and at the same time gave it a good kick. I tried a little of the bitter melon from my mom’s dish. It was my first time eating it. To my surprised it was quite good. Maybe because the bitterness didn’t kick in until later I was able to enjoy the flavors from the sauce. The hainam chicken was very smooth and I’m a fan of dark meat. I don’t get why people like white meat. Ahhh that curry brisket really hit the spot.

Scrambled eggs w/ whitebait
You know what they say about mom’s cooking. There’s none like it and nothing else in the world can compare or as comforting. I told her to cook whatever she felt like. Well I did make one request and that was whitebait aka white rice fish with scrambled eggs. My mom used to make this dish when I was young. Ohhh memories. That night, besides the whitebait with scrambled eggs she also made steamed pork ribs with fermented black beans and a winter melon soup. Everything was so good and comforting. I had two big bowls of steamed rice and finished off everything when everyone was done eating. Now I have to wait another three months to eat my mom’s cooking again.
