Freemans

BBQ heritage pork spare ribs w/ cheddar cheese grits & jicama
I heard of Freemans before but there were never much news about this place so it dropped out of my radar. Until recently my friend suggested this place to have his birthday dinner. My friend told me last time he ate at Freemans, the waitress gave them attitude so obviously my expectation for this place went from not-much to below-zero OUCH!

Couple hours before heading out to Freemans, reservations were made for 9:45pm on a Monday night, I did what anyone would do before heading out to a new restaurant for the first time, I researched the place. Found a lot of positive remarks for their artichoke dip. So Freemans was situated at the end of an alley (Freemans) which was actually kind of cool. It gave off this mysterious, you’re-no-longer-in-manhattan kind of vibe UNTIL I saw Kirsten Dunst lighting up a cigarette and that brought me back down to my below-zero level of expectation. Thanks Kirsten Dunst!! Once we were seated I quickly realized Freemans is not my type of restaurant or I’m just not the type of client Freemans was tailored to. Everyone in there was very SoHo, if that makes any sense. They were tall, skinny, well dressed, and model-like.

Hot artichoke dip
We started off with the hot artichoke dip with crisp bread. I always love a good artichoke dip and this was quite good, actually it was very good. It was hot and cheesy. It was wonderfully good on the crisp bread. This dish alone might just save my poor feelings toward Freemans, I will have to wait for my entree to come to decide.
The birthday boy got fried chicken while 3 people got a fish dish. I got the barbeque heritage pork spare ribs with cheddar cheese grits and pickled jicama. Sorry the photos didn’t come out as good since the place was DARK! The spare ribs were quite flavorful and tender and juicy. The meat fell right off the bone. The jicama gave the dish a nice bit of crisp and lightened up the dish. It was a good combination but not a great one. As for the grits, I wouldn’t have known it had cheddar cheese if it wasn’t on the menu. Overall the dish was tasty and the jicama gave it something different but nothing extraordinary. The hot artichoke dip is worth trying but you can’t get reservation if you don’t have a party of 6 and I hear the wait is horrendously long.
