HA so after my lunch of cod schnitzel and dinner at the always popular Shake Shack at Madison Square Park, I REALLY wanted some desserts. If you live in New York City I’m pretty sure you know about the Dessert Truck and how they couldn’t renew their permit so instead opened a store in the Lower East Side. I still have yet been to the store but LUCKILY they got a seasonal permit this summer and the truck is back! It was surprisingly not too hot that night so I walked from the Flatiron District to the East Village where the truck was parked in their old spot.
I walked up to the truck and looked at the menu. They had the same stuff from the shop and well there wasn’t anything that jumped out at me BUT the guy in the truck had already dropped his dinner, wiped his lips and was ready to take my order. What I really wanted was something cold and creamy like the strawberry angel food cake with thyme whipped creme I had last year. Anyways I ended up getting the warm brioche donut holes, 3 for $6. Hmmm soft round balls covered in sugar and filled with nutella. Most of the time I’m a BIG fan of nutella but for some reason I thought there was just a bit too much nutella in these donut holes. I think nutella is at its best when paired with whipped cream or something to make it less dry. Right? Anyone?

FINALLY after many many attempts I got to try the cod schnitzel from Schnitzel & Things. As for the 2 sides I got potato and cucumber salad. I opened the lid to the pesto mayo and dunked a piece of cod into it and quickly took a bite. I have to say AMAZING! Great flavors like a punch in the face great flavors. And both the potato and cucumber salad went REALLY well with the cod because it sort of sooth your face from being punched by the cod. It was like I was riding a roller coaster, a super tasting roller coaster ride.

The mayor of Red Hook Ball Fields is back! I’m the mayor! I just found out about this. Pretty handy in finding out the names of each vendors and their menus, with pictures.
My quest everytime I go to the Red Hook Ball Fields is to find something new to eat. This past Saturday I found myself chowing down happily a Guatemalan enchilada. As you can see from above a Guatemalan enchilada is waaaaaaaaaay different than the enchiladas we’re used to. This was a fried tortilla, lettuce, pickled beets, ground beef, red sauce, slices of hard boiled eggs, cheese, onions and cilantro. I got this from Carrillo and wasn’t sure what to expect. It smelled kinda funky but tasted REALLY good. And being that it was served chilled its great for summer weather. Then for some weird reason I was craving for rice but I was afraid if I get a rice dish it’ll be too much food. I walked up and down up and down but finally settled at Ceron. Last time I got fried pork with yuca from them and loved it. This time I got the fried chicken with yellow rice and beans. YUM YUM to my tummie for $6. The chicken was perfectly fried and juicy but was bit under seasoned. But hell yeah I’m going to get this again.

This past weekend marked the first appearance of the Red Hook Ballfield Vendors this year. All of the vendors were out, and though the crowds weren’t too bad there was a strong hipster/foodie presence. One of the best things I had was called rellenitos, simply translated as “little stuffed things” — in this case plantains stuffed with black beans. I had them last year when I went with my Dad, but this time they offered to sprinkle some granulated sugar on top of it. It didn’t really add much, because the plantain was already slightly sweet and contrasted nicely with the slightly salty beans. Not quite as good was the mango with chili, lime and salt; mostly because the mango was not nearly ripe enough. Still, the weather was just about perfect, and it felt great to reconnect with this quintessentially Brooklyn experience.

So the LA Street Food Fest on Saturday wasn’t a total epic failure. I did get to eat a few things, from The Gastrobus and Dim Sum Truck, and let me just say, there were pretty damn good. The only plus side of the VIP lounge was the free booze, trying out different teas from T Salon (which I found out is from NY), and catching the debut from the Dim Sum Truck.
