I like brunch but hate the crowd and the wait time, so it’s a good thing Allswell does weekday brunch. Unlike their dinner menu, which changes daily, their brunch pretty much stays the same. There’s something wonderful about leisurely strolling into a restaurant, sit down and leisurely eat your lunch and maybe drink three cocktails (which I did).
The biscuits with sausage gravy and fried eggs was excellent. I usually tend to stay away from biscuits and gravy because I’m afraid it’ll get too heavy in my stomach. But Allswell does it really good and it was quite light. I think I needed an extra biscuit to mop up ALL the gravy.

I even got to taste their housemade chicken dogs which they serve during their late night hours. This made a perfect late night snacks, wash it down with a pint!

If you’ve been a regular at Smorgasburg then I’m sure you know about Mighty Quinn’s Barbeque and the crazy long line of people waiting for their delicious meat. I got lucky once and went early enough with only a handful of people in line. Their meat is definitely good but oh hey they have a spot now in the East Village that will make getting their tasty bbq a whole lot easier.
Many have told me that their brisket was only okay so I decided to get the pulled pork. For about $8, you get a massive amount of pork, topped with bbq sauce and comes with cole slaw and one veg side (I opted for the pickled onions). This was one serious sandwich. Tender juicy pork overflowing out of the bun (is it okay to have wanted two thick slices of Texas toast instead?) and wash everything down with a root beer. Oh yeah.

I just came back from a 2 week time off in LA and it was FREAKING wonderful. Though it wasn’t all play. The first week I spent it with these guys (yes I was doing work) and the second week was a total tv on the couch time.
Besides eating burgers from In-N-Out and mom’s cooking, most of the meals I had were from places I have never been before. Luckily everything I ate during my 2 weeks in LA was mighty delicious.
Check out what I ate after the jump…

Donny: I’m pretty sure by now most of you have heard of the story behind M. Wells and ultimately M. Wells Dinette, so let’s just skip all that and go straight to the food at the new dinette.
Howard: I had never been to the original site of M. Wells. It’s true LIC was just a little too far out of the way, but that was only part of the reason. The other is that I had the impression that it wasn’t too vegetarian friendly. They might have gone over the top with bone marrow and foie gras, but I hadn’t heard anything about vegetarian food. But when Donny suggested we check out their new location at PS1 I admit I was curious. So we made the trip for lunch on a rainy day, during the NY Art Book Fair.

Summer maybe over but there are still loads of tomatoes to be eaten. Here are some of our favorite ways to cook and eat tomatoes.
Tomato and egg over rice, a total comfort food meal.
A quick and easy tomato sauce. Howard used canned tomatoes but fresh tomatoes should work just fine.
And once you got your tomato sauce down, you can totally add other ingredients to it. For the tomato and capers with linguine, I used tomato paste but go ahead and substitute it with your freshly made tomato sauce.
Howard cooks tomato and linguine his way.
How about a tomato gratin dish?
Tomato, eggplant and smoked mozzarella make a great side dish.
And for the adventurous people, freeze your tomatoes and grate them over everything!

Tomorrow is the 8th annual Vendy Awards (3rd year at Governors Island). The Vendy Awards may just be one of my favorite events to attend. I missed out last year but I’m pretty damn excited for this year since many of my favorite trucks/vendors are nominated for an award this year (Uncle Gussy’s, Torta Neza, The Cinnamon Snail, Piaztlan Authentic Mexican Food, Melt Bakery).
Another person that I know is a big fan/supporter of street food is my friend, Brian Hoffman aka Eat This NY. He’s such a big supporter of street food, he even gives food cart tours in the Financial District and Midtown (along with his fellow tour guides from Turnstile Tours). I thought it would be the best time to take one of their tours before the Vendy Awards. I have heard many good things and Blondie from Blondie and Brownie went on his tour last Wednesday and had a blast.

Is 160 Havemeyer St in south Williamsburg the foodiest address? There’s already Nha Toi, a Vietnamese joint serving not-so-traditional food like a fried duck egg banh mi. I still haven’t been but from what James Boo said, I should’ve gone asap 2 years ago.
So why do I think 160 Havemeywer is the foodiest address? Well both newly opened Lake Trout and Blue Collar Good Job also have the same address.
