I like brunch but hate the crowd and the wait time, so it’s a good thing Allswell does weekday brunch. Unlike their dinner menu, which changes daily, their brunch pretty much stays the same. There’s something wonderful about leisurely strolling into a restaurant, sit down and leisurely eat your lunch and maybe drink three cocktails (which I did).
The biscuits with sausage gravy and fried eggs was excellent. I usually tend to stay away from biscuits and gravy because I’m afraid it’ll get too heavy in my stomach. But Allswell does it really good and it was quite light. I think I needed an extra biscuit to mop up ALL the gravy.

I even got to taste their housemade chicken dogs which they serve during their late night hours. This made a perfect late night snacks, wash it down with a pint!

Words and photos by Jackie McBrien and Candace Edwards
This past Tuesday at the 69th Armory, The Village Voice threw its 6th annual Choice Eats festival with over 86 participating New York City restaurants. While we wanted to eat every dish (and sample as many alcoholic beverage), after our seventh or eighth sample we realized that feast feat was, well, impossible. And dangerous. We did manage to hit the munchie double digits (I counted about 18 different restaurants) before we rolled back home. As first timers with zero prep and really no desire to pace ourselves, I think we did a pretty good job.

On a quiet street in the sort of empty area in Chinatown sits a tiny restaurant, Cheeky Sandwiches. Definitely one of those places you’ll miss if you blink. The space is small and the door to get in is smaller but the owner is all heart. He’s super friendly and makes one of the best fried chicken sandwiches in town. This is one of those places I regret not going sooner.
Delicious fried chicken on a bed of slaw topped with gravy and between a biscuit. What better combo?

I just came back from a 2 week time off in LA and it was FREAKING wonderful. Though it wasn’t all play. The first week I spent it with these guys (yes I was doing work) and the second week was a total tv on the couch time.
Besides eating burgers from In-N-Out and mom’s cooking, most of the meals I had were from places I have never been before. Luckily everything I ate during my 2 weeks in LA was mighty delicious.
Check out what I ate after the jump…

Last Friday was the first ever Viva La Comida! A street festival held at the Dunningham Triangle by the 82nd Street Partnership. Just by looking at the amount of people that attended and the long ass lines for each food vendors (heard the Arepa Lady had a 50min long line), people really craved for a street fest in that part of town. Heck, it brought many of us Brooklyn people out to Queens. Congrats again to the 82nd Street Partnership and Jeff Orlick (for curating the list of food vendors). Can’t wait till the next one!

Tomorrow is the 8th annual Vendy Awards (3rd year at Governors Island). The Vendy Awards may just be one of my favorite events to attend. I missed out last year but I’m pretty damn excited for this year since many of my favorite trucks/vendors are nominated for an award this year (Uncle Gussy’s, Torta Neza, The Cinnamon Snail, Piaztlan Authentic Mexican Food, Melt Bakery).
Another person that I know is a big fan/supporter of street food is my friend, Brian Hoffman aka Eat This NY. He’s such a big supporter of street food, he even gives food cart tours in the Financial District and Midtown (along with his fellow tour guides from Turnstile Tours). I thought it would be the best time to take one of their tours before the Vendy Awards. I have heard many good things and Blondie from Blondie and Brownie went on his tour last Wednesday and had a blast.

Have you been to Avenue C? Few years ago I would’ve said HELL NO to go alll the way to Avenue C. It felt like going to the edge of the world and it still does in some ways. But after having my meal at Bobwhite Lunch and Supper Counter, opened back in January, I have no problem going to the edge.
I have had my fair share of fried chicken eating in this town (Pies ‘n’ Thighs, The Brooklyn Star, Hill Country Chicken, Buttermilk Channel, and The Redhead.) but there’s still so much I haven’t tried and keeping a list doesn’t actually help me eat more fried chicken. Anyways, I met up with Molly for dinner at Bobwhite. The atmosphere, the feeling I got when I sat down, the super nice workers and ultimately the delicious fried chicken totally put this place on the top of my fried chicken list.
