MAAANNNYYY MAAANNNYYYY months ago No. 7 Sub started to do breakfast sandwiches from 8 to 10:30am. I was definitely intrigued. Some of their sandwiches don’t quite work as a whole but still tasty. I love the bread that they use soft but still sturdy enough to whole everything together. Yes I like this place, a lot. Now it took me a long time to try all of their sandwiches. It took me so long that in the middle of it they changed the menu.

Pickled banana cucumber peanut butter sandwich

Yes pickled banana. Thats what the menu said. I love bananas but not very sure about pickled bananas. Thank goodness there weren’t any funky taste well nor did it had any other tastes/flavors besides the banana. The mushy bananas totally over powered the whole sandwich. The cucumbers offered a good contrast but guess what this is no one on the menu. Guess they thought it didn’t work also.

Broccoli, egg, and cheese with smoked gouda and Thai basil pesto

I love egg and cheese sandwiches and broccoli so I had high hopes for this. I think the broccoli was just lightly boiled so I had a nice crunch to it. I couldn’t taste the egg and the Thai basil pesto tasted pretty good but didn’t recognize it as Thai basil. The sauce was a bit overwhelming and the smoked gouda didn’t do much for me.

*Edit. Just got this same sandwich today and have to say it tasted better this time. The sauce wasn’t as overwhelming and I was able to taste all the ingredients.

Roasted pork loin with scrambled eggs, fontina and blueberry sriracha

Blueberry sriracha! Crazy talk I know. The blueberry sriracha, for some reason, tasted like a Chinese vegetable that I eat, gailan? There was a funky smell I think it came from the fontina but it wasn’t too bad. This was a pretty good sandwich, had a nice kick to it from the blueberry sriracha.

Corned beef hash with scallion cream cheese and poppyseeds

Not quite sure how this was a breakfast sandwich but it was deeelicious. Though got poppy seeds stuck in my teeth. I googled for images of this sandwich and found couple. There used to be green/yellow cucumbers but I didn’t get any in my sandwich. The cream cheese was good and tangy but didn’t really notice the scaillions. I don’t eat a whole lot of corned beef hash so I wasn’t sure, for $5, if this was a good amount of corned beef hash.

General Tso’s soft boiled fried egg with pickles, mayo, and arugula

Finally a sandwich where the egg is the star! It was a little salty, a little spicy, and a little bit messy with the yolk dripping down. I never had anything General Tso before so I can’t comment if it tasted like anything General Tso. This was a pretty good sandwich with the egg cooked perfectly. How does one deep fried a soft boiled egg and keep the yolk runny?!

Check out my first review of No. 7 Sub. Sadly they don’t serve the turkey cubano sandwich anymore.

This past weekend was the 4th annual New York Food Film Festival. Basically they show food related films and people come and watch and eat. There were about half a dozen different events throughout the city but I only went to the food truck drive-in on Saturday. In the end this event was a bit disappointing. Hopefully they’re fix it somehow for next year. One of the few problems the event had was that it never got crowded which was good for me because I hate crowds but that left a lot of the food vendors standing around waiting for customers to come. Few of the vendors even packed up and left early. It was a free event but they capped the number of tickets to 3000. Later the event even tweeted that they were opening it up to the public. Also the event was a bit tooooooo long, noon to 10pm.

Though few of the vendors, the Cooking Channel gave free popsicles from People’s Pops, The Krave Truck and Wafels & Dinges, had a constant stream of customers. I definitely was guilty of being in those lines. Sooorrrrryyyyyy but The Krave Truck is like the closest we have to the Kogi Truck and they’re from New Jersey. Also who doesn’t want free popsicles?

The first thing I ate were 2 kravers (picture above), as The Krave truck called it. 2 small sandwichces with 2 choices of meat with cheese, kim chi, on a toasted brioche bun. Sadly they didn’t serve the kravers with toasted brioche bun but regular slider buns. Also I ordered a one with pork and one with short rib but instead got one with pork and one with chicken. Just by looking at the 2 kravers they do look delicious and after eating both they were delicious but the chopped kim chi was way too mild. There wasn’t even a slight kick to them. Boo

Next up I got a free rhubarb and jasmine popsicle from People’s Pops from The Cooking Channel truck. I never had People’s Pop before because I didn’t really want to pay $3.50 for a popsicle but it was FREE at the drive-in. I love jasmine tea so this popsicle was deeeelicious.

After walking around and snapping photos of the event I got myself a grilled cheese sandwich (All Day Breakfast sandwich) from The Milk Truck. I got the ……. and it was good! Crunchy bread with cheese and an egg, whats not to love?

The last thing that I ate at the event was a Belgian wafel from Wafels & Dinges with nutella and bananas. I still remember the first time I had a wafel from here. A cold winter night and a freshly made warm wafel, ahhhhh. I still wish they make fresh wafels at the truck but oh well, they do great stuff.

Here are some more photos from that day.
I had no idea it was THIS difficult to find a decent breakfast place in Tribeca. But thanks to Serious Eats I found Locanda Verde which perfectly was connected to the hotel that my sister was staying while she was in town. Though I thought I had found a new place to eat but she had already gone there for breakfast the day before. Ah oh well it was new to me.

There weren’t that many things I wanted to eat on the menu but finally decided on Uova Modenese poached eggs with cotechino hash, spinach, and tomato hollandaise. I didn’t know what “cotechino” was and wasn’t having high expectations. When the dish came I still wasn’t expecting much seeing how tiny the dish was, yes yes I eat a lot. It does look pretty though. With the fork I got a some eggs, spinach and sausages and ate it. !!!!!!!!! WOW!! The tomato hollandaise sauce was amazing! It was my first time having hollandaise sauce with tomatoes in them and I’m sure without them this would’ve just been a plain dish. I really wanted to eat slowly just to savor the moment and wished there was more bread.

Oh Mile End, I like how you bring a TON of people onto Hoyt Street every weekend during brunch hours. No I don’t actually. I hate waiting with big crowds, I’m hungry and I want to eat right away but for some odd reason I don’t mind waiting for dim sum. Weird. Anyways the only time I’ve been to Mile End was just to go and pick up my Montreal bagels.

Yes I’ve been wanting to go try Mile End for a while now but they close too damn early everyday and with the crowds over the weekend I’ll never get to go! Oh wait they just did announce their brand spankin new dinner hours! w00t! Maybe now I can get my smoked meat finally?

So my sister, Bonnie, was in town again and like last time I took her to a place close to my place, oh yes Mile End for early Monday breakfast. I really love the interior of Mile End so simple and nice and bright. At 9:30am the place was empty except for the workers and 1 diner. Too bad they don’t have smoked meat before noon. They only offered 4 items for breakfast or I guess 5 if you count Mish-Mash with salumi or Mish-Mash with lox. Mish-Mash is scrambled eggs with onion and peppers served with 2 slices of bread. My sister got the Mish-Mash with lox while I got the Breakfast Sandwich bacon from The Meathook, eggs and cheese.

I dooooooooooo love love love my breakfast sandwich. On weekends I usually go to Court Street Bagel and for $3.75 get a sausage egg and cheese on a roll and sometimes on weekday mornings I get the same thing at the deli near work. Oh jebus look at the yolk pooooouuuurrring out. What a beauty. The egg was so lovely I wanted to give the cook a hug!

The Mish-Mash with lox was good too. I was surprised to find big chunks of lox and not itsy-bitsy pieces. Secretly I was hoping my sister would’ve gotten the Mish-Mash with salumi but after taking a bite of the lox I was glad she got it.

Someday I’ll be back for the smoked meat!
