Schnitzel & Things on Smith St.
I can’t tell you how excited I am with Schnitzel & Things. I do think there are just too many trucks serving sweets and tacos. Don’t get me wrong, I love those trucks but I need me some varieties. Yes, there are the Cravings truck and the burger truck but they are no where near me at any time of the day nor week. And yes I can just go to Chinatown and get a chicken thigh over rice or well….pretty much anywhere for a burger but serving nice schnitzel from a truck now thats something.
Come on! Deep fried meat who doesn’t want some?

Cafe Steinhof
Spaetzle with eggs, ham and red onion with salad

In my neighborhood there aren’t many choices for food. It’s super dominated by Thai, pizzerias, and Mexican food. I love Thai food and burritos are so convenient but I get bored of those rather quickly. I usually make myself go to Chinatown on my way home from work to get dinner but some times I’m lazy and I’ll just pick up something near home. I spend a good a amount of time searching for any new type of restaurants in my hood and so that’s how I found Cafe Steinhof, seems to be the only Austrian/German restaurant in the hood. It’s one of those restaurants that you just don’t really pay attention when you walk by it but once you know and have tried it you’ll wanna go back.
Met up with A for brunch on a Saturday morning around 11:30am, brunch crowds are horrible. We walked into a really nice spacious place with only couple groups of people inside. I told A that it’s nice to go to a brunch place and not have to wait 2 hours and the feeling was very laid back which was super awesome! A got the 2 eggs with kielbasa w/ potatoes and salad. I got the spaetzle with eggs, ham(optional), red onion and salad and we shared a bowl of steamed mussels in a spicy tomato, basil, garlic, white wine broth. The mussels were surprisingly bad but the broth was good. Not sure what happened to the mussels, they seem old and overly cooked AND there were brown gooey stuff! Do mussels poop? If they do that was what it looked like. Our brunch item came and totally nothing like the mussels these were very good. My spaetzle and eggs was simple and hearty and it was a BIG plate for only $9. Same for A’s dish, the potatoes were great and so was the kielbasa also $9.

The Organic Tour

A farmer’s market is the best place to go if you want to buy your food locally and organically. It’s also a great place to support the farmers who grow the food. Here at Eat To Blog we are proud to announce that we are teaming up with Chef Antonio Medina from The Gastrobus to offer you a guide around farmer’s markets in Los Angeles which we call “The Organic Tour.”
