Ah people visiting NYC. The tough thing about writing a food blog is that people tend to turn to you for good places to eat or must try places. I’m not very good at this. I actually don’t go out THAT much and when I do I tend to go to my regular spots instead of trying new ones. SO of course you know how difficult it was to think of places to take my friend, Virginia, when she visited NYC. She was in town for a whole week and I haven’t seen her for a few years. Yeah even missed her wedding. I suck. I know.

How do you show your friend all the good things to eat in NYC in just few hours? Food crawl! Here’s where we went.

All About Curry
Well all about the Japanese curry to be more precise. There’s always a box of House Curry Mild in my kitchen because it’s damn easy to cook this. Cook some veggies or some meat or some both or not, then add water and the curry. Cook until the curry has all been dissolved and veggies/meats are done. One box of curry has about 12 servings and I usually use the whole box. I just love curry! One of my food mission when I was still living in LA was to go to all of the Curry Houses but I only made it to 4 Anyways, I usually invite people over when I make a big pot of curry but even then I end up with a large container of leftover curry that would last me for another 4 meals. Yes I said I love curry but even I get bored of eating curry over rice for more than 2-3 times. So what I usually do is freeze the rest of the curry or change it up a bit.

One night I found myself craving for curry and of course I made a giant pot. But instead of freezing the rest I came up with the idea of creating other dishes with the same curry sauce.

Night Market
Got an email from the guys at Big Gay Ice Cream asking if I wanted to help them at the Luckyrice David Chang Night Market. I replied “OF COURSE ANYTHING FOR YOU GUYS!” I don’t think I really typed in all CAPS but I definitely had all CAPS in my mind when I replied to them. I had heard about this Night Market thing but when I went to the website it was already sold out. But hey-yo! Thanks to Doug and Bryan I got to go even though my main job was to help them pass out samples and snap photos for them.

Curry beef ramen
This was a great meal. Like I said in many previous posts what makes up a great meal is going to be different for you. Zuzu Ramen is one of those places where they’re going to make you spend $14 on a bowl of ramen. $14!! On ramen!!! And it wasn’t even amazing ramen, it was only okay. But I am glad that it is there. We need more ramen shops in Brooklyn!

So if the ramen was only okay, why did I think it was a great meal? That whole day I was craving for some Japanese curry but I rarely go into the city during weekends and heck I’m not going to go into the city just for curry. Then after a drink fest at Draft Barn with Mr.Matt, I had my mind set on grabbing dinner at Zuzu. It was a chilly night and at that moment I wanted ramen. I walked into a near empty place and grabbed a seat along the wall. I looked through the menu and saw a curry ramen, hello! I was able to satisfy 2 cravings in 1 night with 1 meal. I think that was pretty great.

Also the place was kinda quiet and cozy which was what I needed after few hours at the Draft Barn.

Daikokuya
How do you like a restaurant even before you ordered the food? For me, by playing Runaway by Bon Jovi then followed by Always and Wanted Dead or Alive. How frakkin’ cool is this place?

My family were having lunch before going to the Buddhist Temple for Chinese New Year. My sister, Bonnie, took us here because I had a craving for soupy noodles.

Innards
24 HOUR SAKE BAR!!! KNOW WHAT WE CAN BE DOING AT 6AM ON A MONDAY MORNING?! SAKE!! Thats what I told my friend Matt when I found out Haru Hana, a 24 hour sake bar, was opening soon near our work. After coming back from the holidays, on my way to get lunch at Woo Ri Jip, I noticed Haru Hana was opened. I quickly ran back to the office after getting my lunch of course to tell Matt. I believe it was the next day that I IM’ed him to ask, “lunch?” he said sure but where? I replied “24 sake bar of course!”

*Note, I don’t see the sign that says “24 hours” anymore and can’t really find any info if it’s still is “24 hours” so maybe its no longer “24 hours”.
