Howard’s Favorites of 2012

I know it’s been a while since I posted anything; time has been going by way too quickly. The end of the year is suddenly upon us, and that means it’s time for my annual list of favorites. Above you see rice cakes from Mission Chinese, dusted with copious amounts of mouth-numbing Sichuan peppercorn. A great dish, to be sure, but did it make my list of favorites?


Favorite Meal I Never Blogged About: Spicy & Tasty
Donny & I met up with our friend Anton (of P&H Soda Co.) in Flushing for a great meal. Everything was good, but my favorite was this dish of cold bamboo shoots with chili paste and sesame oil. The bamboo bears no resemblance whatsoever to the stringy yellow rectangles I grew up with.


Favorite Secret Supper Club: Um Segredo
My friend Chef Dave Santos (pictured right) invited me to be his guest at a vegetarian version of his popular supper club, Um Segredo, and I’m glad he did. We had an incredible 6-course menu made with seasonal veggies. Read the full story on BrooklynVegetarian.


Favorite Food Outside Of NYC: Ah Balling Peanut Soup, Singapore
It’s hard to pick a favorite from all of the great food we had in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, but in the end the peanut soup in Singapore’s Chinatown may have been the best dish I had the entire trip. The dumplings in the sweet soup contained various pastes: one had sesame, another green tea, etc. Unusual but incredibly delicious. Read more about my trip over on Serious Eats.


Favorite Meal of 2012: Grilling On Fire Island
In August my friends Jeff and Eva invited me out to spend the day at their place on Fire Island. It turned out to be one of the most relaxing days of my life, and we had an incredible lunch: grilled veggies, couscous with feta and lime, and plenty of cold beer.
