Although my dad and I have some things in common, it’s hard to find something that we both like to do. While my mom and my sister were in Spain, my dad called me up and asked me if I was free for the weekend. Donny and I had planned to visit the Red Hook Ball Field vendors, so I invited my dad along. I think he had a good time, and he kindly wrote up what he thought of the experience.

Momofuku Milk Bar
I believe Howard and I are the last to visit the Milk Bar. Seems like every food blog has blogged about how awesome this place is. To be honest I was just too damn lazy to go. Well we finally made it. After watching The Hurt Locker at the Sunshine theater Howard and I were looking for something else to do. I wanted to snack on something and suggested the Milk Bar.

Big Gay Ice Cream Truck
Funny how I was typing my post on Momofuku Milk Bar where I had their banana cake. And I said on there that I love the flavor of bananas. So of course I was happy to see that Doug, Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, had banana-cocoa puree as a topping today! I just took a red eye flight last night from LA and didn’t get much sleep but damit I’m gonna get me some ice cream after work! I walked from 32nd to 17th. While I was walking down I came up with my 2nd option in case he ran out of banana-cocoa puree. Then I remember seeing wafers as another topping and thought it would be mighty tasty to add that on top of the banana-cocoa puree. When I got there I asked him if he still has the puree and he said YES. SWEET! And yes I got the wafers also. I took a BIG first bite and it was everything I hoped it would be. Really strong banana flavors, love it! Plus the wafers it felt like I was eating a deconstructed banana cocoa cream pie. I once ate a whole banana cream pie by myself.
It was also nice to chat a bit with Doug about the Vendys and Men Pocky sticks and Japan. Not sure what I’ll do once he retires for the winter season. *sigh

Way back when I attended the Village Voice Choice Eats Show, I had some excellent food from Mumbai Xpress: a potato fritter on a roll, and a salad made with puffed rice (apparently popular street food in India). I’ve been craving it ever since, but Mumbai Xpress is too far away for me to get to easily. When I read about Aamchi Pao it seemed they had the same type of food , but in a location easier for me to access.

“Oh yes, the season has begun,” said the vendor, as he saw me eyeing these jupiter seedless grapes. Before she left for a trip to Africa, my friend Jess asked me if I’d seen grapes at the Market yet, and here they are.

The Spotted Pig
I have heard nothing but praises for April Bloomfield’s the Spotted Pig in the West Village. By the way, what IS a gastropub? I found this very detail analysis of gastropub in England over at Pubology. Most of what I have heard about the Spotted Pig was how awesome their burger and shoestring fries were. I was more curious about their other food besides the burger but I do love to have some shoestring fries with rosemary. So when my sister was over here in NYC for a wedding photography gig, I used the chance to take her to the Spotted Pig and finally find out why everyone loves this place.
