Fish balls and rice rolls with sweet sauce, peanut sauce and sesame seeds from a street vendor in Chinatown for breakfast. I remember when I was a kid, there was something similar in my elementary school cafeteria. During break time I would be so tempted to buy a skewer of delicious fish balls deep fried to golden brown, a perfect snack for snack time! The sad thing was my dad would never let me buy them. He said it’s dirty and they served the fish balls even if it was dropped on the floor. I didn’t care if it was dirty, I knew I wanted one no matter what. Zap to the present and finally old enough to make my OWN decisions haha. For $2.50 (used to be waaaaaaaaaay cheaper) you get a pretty decent sized container of yummy goodness. If I’m super hungry I would get a small porridge to go with it. If you haven’t tried give them a chance!! This one was right outside the Q,N subway entrance on Canal St and there’s one on Grand St between Bowery and Chrystie near the B,D subway entrance. After breakfast these carts are replaced with the fried fish balls, chicken legs chow mein and fried rice carts.

It must be fig season somewhere in the world — markets and fruit stands everywhere are overflowing with them. Biting into a perfectly ripe fig is like biting into a ball of honey. Get ‘em while they’re good.

Once again the Farmer’s Market surprised me with its bounty. There was a lot to choose from, including some cantaloupes, which I don’t remember having seen at the market ever before. But the most photogenic by far was the eggplant. The farm stand above had three different varieties, though I got the standard Italian eggplant. Someone wiser than me pointed out that eggplant is one of the most versatile vegetables (though technically it’s a berry), but only when cooked. Luckily it takes well to tons of cooking processes — it’s good fried, baked, roasted, grilled, smoked, pureed…

Stuffed croissant French toast
My friend, Matt, raved about how good the French toast was at the Windsor Cafe in south Slope. I love bread so of course I love French toast but he said this wasn’t just your regular square white bread French toast nope. This was stuffed croissant French toast!!! My first reaction was NO WAY!!!! My eyes were wide opened. TELL ME MORE!!!! You said it was stuffed, what was it stuffed with?!?!?!?! It was stuffed with a mixture of raisins, banana and cream cheese. OOHHHHHHHHHH…… *drool

Finally one lazy Sunday I made it out to Windsor Cafe to try this stuffed croissant French toast. We sat down and looked through the brunch menu. There were few items that I wanted to try but…NO I had a mission and that mission was to eat the French toast. After a moment our food came. The waiter put a plate in front of me 2 flat round shaped things and no butter nor syrup. French toast right? Where’s the butter and syrup? I cut a piece in half and revealed it was filled with raisins, bananas and cream cheese. I took a big bite and right away I knew why there was no butter nor syrup. The cream cheese itself was sweet and was quite heavy. The bananas and raisins gave it a nice touch but eating 2 of these…*oy!! Felt so heavy afterwards.
