10 Weird Gourmet Foods
Posted by: Howard
Neatorama posted a list of 10 “weird” gourmet foods from around the world. I was astonished to discover that I’ve eaten three of them, so being a vegetarian doesn’t limit you that much. Here’s the list, with my notes:
Ortolan
Canard à la Rouennaise (Duck in Blood Sauce)
Huitlacoche (Corn Fungus) — I ate this at Chiles y Chocolate here in Park Slope , and it was by far the best part of the meal.
Durian — In Vietnam I had durian ice cream, which I count.
Live Baby Octopus
De Jaeger (Snail Caviar)
Bird Nest Soup
Balut (Duck Fetus Egg)
Kopi Luwak (Poop Coffee) — Again in Vietnam. We were told it was the real deal, and it was incredibly rich and tasty. This is made from coffee beans that have passed through the digestive system of a weasel-like animal, in case you were wondering.
Casu Marzu (Maggot Cheese)
How many of these have you eaten?

I really can’t believe people will eat some of this stuff. Could you imagine eating live baby octopus! I spoke with someone who lived in Japan and they kept telling her to eat shark cheeks to keep her skin firm. There have to be better ways.
